Raising 8 little monkeys while studying keeps me on my toes! Between the kids' school & my studies my little blog has not been 'loved'.

This blog will find itself a new home so that I can keep up with you all! Thanks so much for your patience and patronage as I make this change!
I will probably be one of those folks raiding the stores last minute. Between all the family, friends, teachers, therapists and intervention specialists, my gift list is a little on the long side. My fellow special needs parents can possibly relate that a small token of appreciation for all those who work so hard with my kids is hardly enough to express the gratitude for helping my kids meet all their milestones due to their tireless efforts!

I have been browsing my library of patterns to find the right gift for all those near and dear to me. I thought I would share with y'all a few of my favorite patterns that have been easy to work up for those of y'all that are handy with a hook and yarn.

Enjoy!
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a darling gal named Ashley through work. I remember early on in her pregnancy, she was given the news that her child would be born with one limb shorter than the other. I didn't think much of it because Ashley was always so graceful, and happy at work. Little by little, her son's story began to unfold and I realized the severity of her son's condition.

I wanted to reach out to you all and wish you a happy 2013! Yes, I know I am a little late, but it's for a good reason. 2013 is going to be a great year for the 8 Little Monkeys (both at home and in the shop)!

Daddy monkey is back in school and acing all his classes. I am so very proud of his accomplishments. He is not only a 4.0 student, but he manages to keep our house organized. What a gift it is to come home to a hot meal on the table, laundry nicely folded, homework folders signed/checked/etc.!

Our second oldest monkey is a senior in high school this year. Where has the time gone? It may sound cliche, but it seems like yesterday, he was just in elementary school and I was meeting him for the first time. The next few months are going to be full of graduation planning, college planning, SAT, ACT and just more planning!

One of our little monkeys went back to school this year after being homeschooled for 3 years! It has been a transition for us all. We are so proud of how much this little guy has achieved in 6th grade. Autism does not slow down what he can do!

The youngest little monkey is turning 6 in just a few weeks. It doesn't even seem real to me. I love watching what she does and how much she grows everyday, but I wish I could keep her little still (although she will always be my baby). The age of 6 is no longer baby/preschooler age. Recently, daddy monkey and I were planning our little monkey's birthday party. We realized that this is it. After her, there are no more babies in the house. We are celebrating every moment of every day with her.

So basically, between graduations, IEP meetings, birthdays and coping with empty nest(ish) feelings our house hold has been busy busy!

Now on to 'monkey business'....

In the next few weeks, I have some special things coming up. First and foremost is something 8 Little Monkeys is doing for a special family. I am adding new things to the shop and there are a few other surprises in the works.

Whew, that was just a glimpse of what 2013 has in store for us, and the wheels are already spinning....How is 2013 treating you?8 Little Monkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09947376070413467859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532185920597879456.post-10002406659708772402012-12-13T03:20:00.000-05:002012-12-13T03:20:22.510-05:00Wednesday's Woman - Sandy Powers<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Ok...so, I'm a little late on posting this, but I am excited to share with you all. I couldn't wait until next Wednesday.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Do you ever get in a creative funk? I know that I do. When I have a ball of yarn and a hook in hand but I'm not sure what direction to take, I have a few sources of inspiration I like to turn to. One of my crochet heros is Sandy Powers. You may have seen some of Sandy's work on Etsy in her shop, <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Sandy's Cape Cod Originals<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">. Perhaps if you have picked up a copy of Crochet World magazine or Annie's Attic you may have seen her darling cuddle cocoons. Most recently, you may have seen <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Baby Crochet<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> at your local bookstore, yep, that's Sandy's work too!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So many ideas, so little time (and yarn). Recently, I chatted with (or emailed) Sandy to pick her brain a little bit.....enjoy!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Q: Tell the world a little bit about
Sandy's Cape Cod Originals?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I love creating new crochet patterns. I
like to think that I design unique and different patterns. My
imagination is endless sometimes. And if only my fingers could
crochet as fast as my thoughts. I love designing for babies and my
first two books that <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">are in print are for babies. My next book coming
out next May or June of 2013, is a book of wedding crochet items and
I have enjoyed the challenge of designing for adults and children in
this book. The publishers have already asked me to do a Baby Crochet
book 2 and I am still thinking if I want to do this book. Because I
have been designing so much for the books, my Etsy site has been
sadly neglected. My dream is to have all of my designs in books and
to cut back on the Etsy shop. I have over 400 patterns for sale on
Etsy and sometimes it is overwhelming for people to go thru all those
pictures. So I’ll be doing less Etsy and more book designing.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: What was your motivation in starting
Sandy's Cape Cod Originals ? How did it come to life?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: My motivation to
write crochet patterns came from when I was selling actual made items
on Etsy, many people would ask me if I sold the pattern for them.
Also I went for a mammogram and they found a lump. I had to wait 2
weeks before they did the biopsy and during that time I asked myself,
“what would you do if you had one week to live?” and one of the
things was to write down some of my crochet patterns.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: When you aren't making beautiful
creations for the world, what are you doing?
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
A: I love to play
angry birds friends version. Every week they have a new tournament
and me and a few of my friends play against each other.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="color: red; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I also like to
work on baby hats that I donate to different organizations.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: Quote/motto you live by:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: Be
still and know that I am God. I try to not do anything without
knowing God is involved in what I am doing.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: What is one of your guilty pleasures?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
A: I love lobster
and when they are on sale, my daughter and I indulge in them for
lunch as often as we can.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: Lip gloss, cell phone & gum - I
can't leave home without it! What's yours?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
A: Tissues, cell
phone, mints, hair brush, debit cards, medical cards. And most of all
yarn and a crochet hook. You never know when you will be delayed
somewhere (doc office or stuck in traffic) and can get some
crocheting time in.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: What/who inspires your designs?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: Poems, children’s stories, brides, babies, children, tv,

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: Can't crochet without it...what is
your favorite crocheting item/product?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
A: A Susan Bates
hook and nice yarns
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Q: When did you start crocheting?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A: I
was 18years old when I started crocheting

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

Hope everybody had a safe and happy Thanksgiving! If you're not too stuffed from holiday yummies, you may enjoy this quick and easy pattern I ran across a few months ago on Jamie's Jems Blog. Jamie has been so kind to share her pattern for the Frog Camera Lens. Perfect for the photographer, or budding photographer, or perhaps a little goodie to fascinate your little one during a photoshoot. All you need is a K size hook, a hair tie/rubber band, some yarn and a little time.

Red Heart has a darling little pattern for a Princess and the Frog doll. I'm thinking stocking stuffers or maybe a nice baby shower gift?

Keep things nice and tidy for the frog lover in your life with this Frog Amigurumi Pouch by Character Crochet on Craftsy.

I'd love to see your take on these cool little patterns!

8 Little Monkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09947376070413467859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532185920597879456.post-44169550847659038902012-11-30T07:00:00.001-05:002012-11-30T07:00:00.624-05:00Cozy Mugs...Free Pattern FridayI don't know about you, but I struggle finding a new or unique gift idea for my kids' teachers and therapists. As many of you know, I have 2 children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and one who receives various therapies and interventions (but not because of Autism). This year, with my youngest little monkey in kindergarten and my oldest monkey back in public school, I counted a total of over 13 teachers and therapists. Some may say, well, just give the 'main' one a gift. In the world of special education, each and every one of these kiddos' teachers play an integral role in their education!!

This year, I am thinking of working up a few mug huggers for the teachers' coffee cups and maybe a little coffee mug and a pack of hot chocolate or single serve coffee. A few of my favorite patterns are the Snowman Mug Hug from Red Heart.

Red Heart has this cute Puppy Mug Hug also, for the puppy lover on your gift list!

My other favorite is the Coffee Hugger by Loop Leigh Loops. Sorry, this link is not free, but it's only $1.99. I have made it and it is simple and quick to work up!

Micah Makes has this cute pattern for a mug hug with coaster.

Let me know how these work up for you guys!

How many times do you look at a pattern or start a project and you use two strands of yarn? I tried an old trick that I noticed my mother-in-law does - she uses an old tub of butter, punches a hole in the center of the lid and just strings her yarn through there. That works fine for her because she only crochets using size 10 thread. It doesn't work so well when you have funky or bulk yarns.

Perhaps I'm just really goofy and clumsy, but I felt all tangled up. That was until I found this great gem over at Herschner's. The Zip 'n' Go Yarn Organizer bag has three grommets at the top of the bag so you can thread 3 different skeins of yarn (or perhaps more) at once. Here are a few of my thoughts on Zip 'n' Go.

The PROS

Great price - Only $9.99

Light Weight

Doesn't tangle or tear yarn

Great design - has a pocket in the front big enough to hold a pattern or a small book and top zip

Roomy

Long handle

Works out if you want to keeps several skeins of a particular project together. (Heaven knows I'm always misplacing one color or another mid-way through my projects)

The CONS

Only comes in black

No separate storage for hooks or needles, (but I will say that you can easily store these items in the front pocket)

My thoughts over all on the Zip 'n' Go Yarn Organizer.....LOVE IT!

Today marks the second day of my kids' Thanksgiving break. Plus next week there is a teacher in-service day after the break. The little monkeys get a total of 6 consecutive days off. TRUST me, I am planning away on what we should do to keep these guys busy!

This summer we moved to a new house. With our new house,we are starting new traditions. One of which is going to be an advent calendar. Every year we start one, but we start kind of late....(oops). This year, I thought the little monkeys could help me out with making this calendar I found on Etsy.

I love these awesome instructions. Very clear and easy to follow. I would love to see how yours turn out!8 Little Monkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09947376070413467859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532185920597879456.post-15807857257494593112012-11-21T09:30:00.000-05:002012-11-21T09:30:00.857-05:00Wednesday's WomanYou may remember a while back, (actually a LONG while back) I featured Dusty from Crochet My Love on this blog. Since that time, I have been inspired by her and many other wonderful crochet artists and crafters. I would love to pay homage to them all and I hope that you too will be inspired by their creativity. If you are interested in sharing your story please contact me.
I thought I would share this darling little hat that I found on one of my new favorite websites - Repeat Crafter Me. I know that so many families have a holiday tradition of football before or after stuffing themselves with turkey on Thanksgiving. What better way to celebrate the tradition that crocheting a little football hat for the youngest football fan in the house!
It has been so refreshing to see facebook full of positive posts this month! I am jumping on the bandwagon and giving thanks as well. It is amazing to see how much better you feel and how much better you day goes when you give thanks for the simple blessings in life.

I will be honest, at times, it is challenging to think of what to be thankful for. At times, it is overwhelming to say thank you to just ONE person, because there are so many wonderful people in our lives. Over at The Crafting Chicks blog, they had a great post this month with 'prompts' of who to send thank you notes to. This may be a good way to start de-stashing those scrapbook papers that have been collecting dust on your shelves, or perhaps try out a few new scrapping techniques. In the age of technology it is so nice to get a handwritten thank you, a nice note or something other than a bill or advertisement in your 'physical' mailbox.
I'd love to hear from you all how the thank yous are going this month!8 Little Monkeyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09947376070413467859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532185920597879456.post-48962100558553199542012-04-24T06:00:00.000-04:002012-04-24T06:00:02.222-04:00Follow & Win!A few days ago, I posted about my little contest, "Ready, Set, Follow", about following on my blog.
A family that is near and dear to me is in need of some support. As I shared before in a post, their four year old son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with Autism. Recently, the family found out that their little angel has been diagnosed with a brain malformation called, Chiari Malformation. The condition is serious and in order to correct and heal little Isaiah, he must undergo brain surgery and possibly spinal cord surgery. As you can imagine, brain surgery is a costly and delicate procedure that will require a ton of attention from mom and dad. There is still time to help the Biel family.

If you feel moved to help the family, please make a donation directly to them on their ChipIn.com page. Another way to help is to visit my Facebook page. On my Facebook page, I have opened an auction to help the family. In order to bid on items in the auction simply click on the Auction for Isaiah photo album and leave your bid amount and paypal address in the comments. Winner will pay for their item and shipping. Bidding ends at 11:59pm Monday, April 24th. All proceeds will go directly to the Biel family. Following are a few goodies you can find in the auction.
In some of the toughest times in my life, I have been able to count on a few wonderful folks who have lent me an ear, a shoulder to cry on or a helping hand. Recently, I found out that one of the families that has touched my life was given some life changing news about their 4 year old son, Isaiah.
Then, I went to my stash of yarn and I realized that has taken over my bedroom. It wasn't until I logged into my Etsy shop that I noticed that 8 Little Monkeys is a year old!
I say most because my oldest little monkey had a last minute change in school. Finding the right school placement for him has always been a challenge. Luckily, I have been blessed to live in a state that offers great funding opportunities for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This will be our second year of "homeschooling" my son. Homeschooling a child with autism is a completely different game than homeschooling a typical child.

In a few weeks, I'm back to hitting the books myself. Since I lost my job about a year ago, my kids have grown accustomed to seeing me in blue jeans and t-shirts instead of heels and suits. They love having me home when they are finished with school, but they have learned to steer clear of mommy while she is glued to the computer or buried in a textbook.

This quarter is crucial for me. Out of over 150 applicants, I was chosen as one of 8 participants in the school's reality series, "The Biggest Learner". Much like the show, the "biggest loser", there are 2 teams and they are trying to get the highest GPA. Each student from the winning team gets $1,000 scholarship! Wish me luck!
Needless to say, it may be quiet around here at the end of the month. That doesn't mean I don't love all my fans. Stay tuned for some goodies....

As if I don't have enough to do, I thought I would add a few more items to my to-do list. This is actually an exercise in becoming organized and lifting up my spirits a bit. As many of you know, I am a student and a mom to 4 beautiful children and 4 awesome step - kiddos (to be). This week marks the end of my summer quarter and one full year of school! Woo Hoo! I'm super excited about having one year of school under my belt. One(ish) more year to go and I will finally have my associates degree. This is huge considering all the adversity and challenges I have faced from the first time I stepped foot in a college classroom fresh out of high school. When I say fresh, I mean I had just graduate high school a couple of weeks before jumping into college. (And I won't tell you what year that was...)

Over the past few months, I have been making props for photographers and filling orders (slowly) for customers, and every time I sit down with my hooks and yarn, my girls ask me, "are you making a hat for me"? So when Scotti from the Inner Hooker shop posted on her Facebook page a crochet along, I figured it was an excellent opportunity to start on some goodies for my girls while keeping me on track! Well, at least one of them will have something special.

Another little project, is to highlight fellow crafters and mommy-preneurs (and a few dads too) that have been inspirational to 8 Little Monkeys. A few months ago I highlighted Crochet My Love Designs, (I love reading that post!), and I think it's time that I spread the love to all the folks I have met on this journey. I am surrounded by some wonderful folks who have great talent. Through their work and their words, they have kept me going. I hope that you will all join me as I celebrate other talented artists and parents.

Many of you know, that I am the mother of two children with Autism. The
past few months have been a bit of a challenge for our family for a number of reasons. I will be sharing more about my journey, struggles and triumphs with autism in some future posts as well.
Here's a quick & short post for today. When I'm shopping for my little monkeys, I have such a hard time "eye balling" what size they wear. Don't even get me started on shoes....Just in time for back to school, I found this great website called My Fitting Room. How awesome to have your child's measurements at your fingertips when you see that great deal and they are at home/school/camp. Best of all it's free!

This is a great tool for clothing designers and crocheters. Folks can send their child's measurements to you through this website too!
It's just $5, I'll buy it." How many times have you been purging your closet and said, "It was just a $5 shirt. I don't need it anyhow", and that shirt ends up in the donation bag. How often do you tell your kids, I'm not replacing that toy. It was just $5. Imagine if you added up all the times that you think, "it's just $5", and think how much that adds up to?

For me, I love going to Starbucks or Cup O Joe. Luckily, I live a about 1/10th of a mile from both places. Every evening, my wonderful fiancee was treating me to a yummy treat from one of these places. A few months ago, I cut out my evening treat, and I saw how much further we could stretch our budget. (Not to say that I've struck gold by cutting out my Starbucks habit, but it is somewhat helpful on the pocketbook.)

I also realized that I should put my treasure where my heart is, and that is in helping others. With 8 little monkeys to tend to, donating time is difficult, but donating treasure can help others as well. Like I said, I'm totally not rich. I found this great opportunity to donate a little bit of what I do have through contacting a family friend. He started a great mission called The Five Dollar Blessing.

"The Five Dollar Blessing is simply a group of caring people who desire to consolodate our small gifts and words of encouragement to someone in need. Everyone in the group will be made aware of the story of a deserving recipient and will only be asked to send a five dollar blessing ONCE EACH MONTH. Individually, we cannot do much, but collectively we can be a great blessing to someone in need"

When I was 10 years old, I picked up my first crochet hooks. My mom wanted me to learn, so she sent me over to a friends house to learn. My older sister and I had a few lessons, then I don't know what happened, but we didn't continue. Last year, I was cleaning out a closet and I re-discovered my hooks and yarn. After strolling through Etsy - land, I found patterns by Crochet My Love Designs and I've been "hooked" ever since (pun intended).

Today, I probably own most of the patterns that are listed in Crochet My Love's Etsy Shop. My favorite so far has been her Undersea Mermaid Set.
I taught myself how to crochet from a 1970's crochet book when I was 11 years old. I am talking hideous granny square vest patterns... bleh just aweful

What has been your favorite thing about being an Etsy shop owner?

The community of women with the same goal as myself. I have definitely made life long friends from this experience. In real life, My friends make fun of me for doing an "old lady" craft, but my internet friends get it.

If you were a fruit, what fruit would you be? Why?

umm i hate fruit, the texture totally grosses me out. Can i be an Avocado?

What is the most unique thing about your creative process?

The fact that I can crochet anything. I have no idea where the ability came from. One of my photographers asked for a mermaid tail and I just sat down and did it. I don't even visualize my projects first. I let my hands do the work and try to leave my brain out of it. My best projects have been accidents!

Any words of wisdom you want to share with other mommy crafters?

YOU CAN DO IT! If your goal is make this a job so you can be at home with the kids, or just something fun to do, be passionate and motivated and it will come to life. I think about crochet 24 hours a day (as sick as that sounds) I am always planning my next idea, thinking of colors, surfing the net for inspiration, crocheting til 2 am even if i have to get up with the baby at 8 am. Its hard work, but worth the rewards.
Here's another wonderful project I thought I would share with all you wonderful crafters. This is a super cute Amigurumi Robot designed by Allison Hoffman for Caron. I love this pattern because patterns that are for boys and girls are SO hard to find. The girls get all the cute stuff, but what about our precious little boys. They deserve fun & cute stuff too!
